About Us

WANGARI VOLUNTEERS: is a non-profit organization founded by volunteers who were born and raised in rural villages and small towns of Ethiopia. With firsthand experience of the hardships faced by smallholder farmers and rural families, we came together to form a solution-driven organization focused on sustainable development. We are the sons and daughters of smallholder farmers. We grew up in the rural countryside, witnessing the tireless efforts of our parents and neighbors—working day and night using simple tools, oxen, and manual labor. Despite their hard work, the return was always small, leaving families exposed to hunger for months each year.

Mission

To help rural youth and farming communities improve their lives by providing resilient farming training, technical support, and access to essential resources.

Vision

To see hunger-free villages with self-sufficient and empowered communities

Our Story

We are the sons and daughters of smallholder farmers. We grew up in the rural countryside, witnessing the tireless efforts of our parents and neighbors—working day and night using simple tools, oxen, and manual labor. Despite their hard work, the return was always small, leaving families exposed to hunger for months each year.

Farmers in our areas endure harsh conditions:

Scorching sun and heavy rains, Mud, cold, and dry spells Deteriorating soil and unpredictable weather caused by climate change

Many families suffer during the dry season, often going hungry for 3–4 months annually. The children walk long distances to attend school, often without shoes or proper meals, and return home exhausted. Malnutrition, poor health, and school dropouts are common.

Environmental degradation, unreliable rainfall, and animal feed shortages have reduced both crop and livestock productivity. As a result, access to essential foods like milk and butter has become rare. Families lack access to balanced diets, leading to health challenges, especially among children and the elderly.

These struggles inspired us to unite our skills, resources, and energy to form Wangari Volunteers, aimed at transforming the lives of farming communities.
